Elephants and Molasses—What’s the Connection?

Last week’s blog post on the super grain fonio prompted several Co-op members to share more information about this amazing grain and other interesting food tidbits, such as …

Grandma’s Unsulfured Molasses. Yes, the brand with the notable picture of a woman. (In a conversation with a company representative, I was told this represents all women!) While I’ve used this brand for years, there is much I didn’t know! The molasses are unsulfured, with no artificial flavors or colors, fat free, gluten free, and Kosher. They are now made with ingredients that are verified by the Non-GMO Project, a non-profit organization that offers North America’s third-party verification and labeling for non-GMO products.

Aside from the great flavor the product adds to baked goods and savory dishes, the thing I really love about this company is its sponsorship since 2008 of The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee—currently home to 11 elephants retired from zoos and circuses. This sanctuary provides protected, natural habitat environments for Asian and African elephants, many of whom suffer long-term health and behavioral issues common to aging captive elephants. What a great company and tasty product!
