Celebrate Co-op Month—Run for the Board!

Did you know that as a member of the Co-op Food Stores you can run for the Board of Directors?

Our Board has 12 seats, all with 3-year terms. Each year, several seats become open. One of these could be yours!

The International Co-operative Alliance has established 7 Cooperative Principles as guidelines by which cooperatives put their values into practice. They are:

    1. Voluntary & Open Membership
    2. Democratic Member Control
    3. Member Economic Participation
    4. Autonomy & Independence
    5. Education, Training, & Information
    6. Cooperation among Cooperatives
    7. Concern for Community

The Co-op Food Stores honors each and every cooperative principle, but today, we’re going to focus on the 1st and 2nd.

Voluntary & Open Membership

This means that cooperatives are open to all people, without gender, social, racial, political, or religious discrimination.

Democratic Member Control

This means that once elected to the Board, you represent the membership and can set policies and make policy decisions.

These cooperative principles get to the heart of what makes us a truly different kind of business. We’re not governed by and accountable to outside shareholders, but we’re governed by and accountable to each other.
