The Co-op’s administrative building on Buck Road in Hanover sits on a rocky, wooded hillside, just a few miles southeast of Dartmouth College. Deer, squirrels, and groundhogs regularly wander the grounds here, keeping an eye on things. Once in a while there’s even a black bear lumbering around, which is always a treat. It makes going to and from the office even more of an adventure.
Though I work throughout the Co-op, my office is located at Buck Road. Just like our food stores, Buck Road is a Co-op location made up of employees doing amazing work and taking on tough challenges every day. What I love about Buck Road is its energy. I’m surrounded by a team of employees who work in Facilities, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Member Services and Outreach, Merchandising, Operations and Public Relations. With great dedication and little fanfare, each person, each department, provides critical support to our Co-op, to its employees and members, and to our numerous business and community partners. To me, it defines professionalism and teamwork.
A good food store is a marvel of teamwork, engineering, and ingenuity. When we shop the Co-op, we’re so accustomed to a well-operated and customer friendly store, with a seamless support network, we don’t realize how much work, technology, and people power it takes to pull the whole enterprise off.
I’ve written before to thank the many employees who work so hard each day providing great customer service to all our members and shoppers. I want to thank all the employees who support each other every day in so many ways. To quote a famous phrase, one often attributed to Mother Theresa, “I can do things you cannot. You can do things I cannot. Together we can do great things.” With a new year ahead, filled with possibility, I look forward to seeing all the great things we can all do together.
