Sabra Dipping Co., LLC, a specialty food manufacturer of kosher and vegetarian hummus, ghanoush, and other Middle Eastern-style foods, is voluntarily recalling several varieties of hummus because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a serious infection characterized by sudden-onset fever, muscle aches, chills, severe headache, vomiting, and diarrhea. Listeriosis is sometimes fatal in young children, the frail and elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
During Sabra’s testing, Listeria monocytogenes was identified at the manufacturing facility but not in the finished product. This recall is precautionary. To date, no illnesses have been reported.
