Thanks, Road Crews and Volunteers!

Co-op and community volunteers come together to thank some hard-working folks in honor of MLK Day.

On Monday, my colleague Lindsay Smith, Co-op Food Educator, worked with volunteers from the Friends of Mascoma Foundation (FOM) on a community-service project to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day, the federal holiday honoring the life and legacy of the famed civil rights leader.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’—Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

FOM is a local nonprofit that serves the five towns of the Mascoma Valley School District. Working together at the Co-op Culinary Learning Center Monday, Lindsay and FOM volunteers prepared 35 homemade meals of chicken, mac and cheese, biscuits, and roasted vegetables. The Co-op provided the food, containers, and space to work in. FOM provided energetic, enthusiastic volunteers to help make it happen.

On Tuesday volunteers delivered the meals to road crews at the Department of Public Works, just in time for a snowstorm that rolled into the Upper Valley Tuesday night.

“Volunteers will prepare and deliver meals to the DPWs in our district with notes of appreciation for the efforts the groups make to help the community,” Lindsay told me on Monday. “At this time of year, the road crews miss time with family to take care of our roads and help keep us safe.”

Lindsay said she originally planned a class at the Culinary Learning Center in honor MLK Day. After she gave it some thought, she wanted to plan a day of service instead. She told me she hopes this will be the first of many similar projects, a way of using the Culinary Learning Center as a space for the Co-op and community to work together on service projects.

Thanks to all the folks out there who keep our roads clear and streets safe this time of year. And thanks to our good friends at the Friends of Mascoma Foundation, who did so much of the heavy lifting to help pull this project off.
